How to be your own best friend

And not be your own worst enemy

A few years ago, I took upon myself a task to find a best friend for myself. I didn’t know where to start. I felt that a good starting point would be my school.

I had not met my best friend from school since a few decades. I thought a practical example is needed.

I knew John from my local runners group. He had a group of five friends who have survived decades of separation, so-called growing up, having different worlds in their families and work, and still made time to catchup once in a few months. They have been to weddings, divorce proceedings, 5k runs, pub crawls, and many more life events.

His face lights up when he spoke about his friends. And the same with his friends too — I have met them too.

I joined them one evening with a special request. I had a secret reason for this.

How do you be someone’s best friend?

The group fell silent for a few moments. Before bursting into a raucous laughter.

Because of you, I laugh a little harder, cry a little less, and smile a lot more. -Unknown
